The A-Z of Graffiti Art – an art Show Featuring Duel
We went to the opening night of an art show, called ‘Letterheads', at Coppin Gallery, 49 Coppin St Richmond. It was a wild place, a massive warehouse type of place with wild graffiti works on the walls on the way in.Soon the room filled with people who made their way, literally, from A-Z of the innovative, often wonderful works of the graffiti artists featured. The works were largely hung in matching glass frames, giving a sense of uniformity but the styles of each of the 16 artists added remarkable contrast. Some played on their letter and what it might stand for, others made art out of the letter itself, showing off the art of lettering which is often the graffiti artists specialty. My brother, known in the graffiti art world as, had been given the letter ‘L’ to work on, and as one of the most experienced artists featured in the show, his work was among some of those most compelling in the show (sure, I’m his sister, but I seriously found his use of color really appealing). For those of you who imagine graffiti art as removed from contemporary artworks usually found in gallery exhibitions, this art show would have you think again. Duel has his own site complete with online galleries and graffiti shop.

How To Tag Graffiti Letters Alphabet
Street graffiti doesn't always have to be done outside. You can learn your tag alphabet by practicing on paper, slowly adding flourishes, and develop your own style. Many people begin by tagging their nickname, but to fully develop your style, begin by tagging the alphabet.
Intructions:
- Step 1
Using sketchbook and pencil, explore and pick up stylistic impressions. Whether Asian, Indian, Persian, or Arabic, think dynamically as you move fluidly. Think dramatic. Your tag is your signature, and just as you learn to sign a check, you've got to feel comfortable. Make sure that your alphabet remains legible.
- Step 2
Add elements of the tag by erasing the end of letters. You can add arrows to provide a sense of direction. Add flourishes such as swirls or appendages into the letter structure. Symbols can be added to your alphabet as well.
- Step 3
Since letters are so important, it's crucial to develop letter patterns. The best place for beginners is with bubble letters. Use a distinct circular motion from the wrist to the paper. Letters overlap but are not connected.
- Step 4
Once the sketch is adequate, use a solid line to outline the letters in marker. Use a dark color to add shadow, and a third, lighter color to add glow, such as stars, or a light source. Since the letters are fat, you can add symbols or extra writing inside of the letters. Use lowercase writing, or symbols that are special to you.
